Ultra-5 quick blackening > "the easy" - simply blacken steel quickly
A blackening protects steel workpieces from various environmental influences. With little effort and within a short period of time, you can achieve reliably effective surface protection with Ultra-5 quick blackening. The dip burnishing is easy to use and produces a reliably protective black burnishing layer within a very short time. Since this process does not involve any material application, cold blacking is ideal for all workpieces where even the smallest changes in shape are undesirable or which react sensitively to thermal stress.
Areas of application of Ultra-5 rapid burnishing
Compared to other processes, cold blackening creates a protective layer without subjecting workpieces to thermal stress. A further argument in favour of dip burnishing with Ultra-5 rapid burnishing is the high dimensional accuracy that a burnished object retains. This is because, in contrast to coating, no foreign material is applied during blacking. The process changes only the material properties of the surface by the inclusion of oxygen atoms and forms a protective layer about two micrometers thick.
For this reason, dip burnishing with the Ultra-5 rapid burnishing is always the method of choice when a workpiece is not to be subjected to thermal stress or when precision parts are involved in which even the smallest changes in shape have a negative effect on the accuracy of fit during further processing.
Ultra-5 quick burnishing > for which materials?
The burnishing is suitable for cast iron, hardened steels as well as for unalloyed and low-alloy steels. For these materials, rapid burnishing changes the surface of the material through the inclusion of oxygen. The result is a protective oxide layer (in combination with oiling or waxing of the layer), which withstands mechanical stress such as bending and pressure and is resistant to paints, solvents and lubricants. Basically, burnishing shows a high resistance in an alkaline environment, but dissolves on contact with acids.
As the chromium content of the burnished steel grade for Ultra-5 quick blackening may not exceed 5%, we recommend our Ultra-7 quick blackening for even higher alloyed steels up to 12% chromium. Stainless steel is not suitable for classic cold blacking. To burnish workpieces made of stainless steel parts, special processes such as black oxidation or blackening at high temperatures are required.
Zinc can also be blackened with the Ultra-5 quick blackening.
This is how you achieve optimum results in blackening
How well the burnishing works depends on the pre-treatment of the workpiece. Remove all impurities and any existing coatings with special care and avoid contamination with silicone grease or silicone oil. If an object is contaminated with these greases or oils, please remove them without fail with appropriate special cleaners before cold blacking. Because a high-quality burnishing is only possible with an absolutely clean surface.
Fill the burnishing agent into a suitable container and immerse the workpiece in the solution for a few seconds. Finally, dry the burnished item and oiling the surface well. In this way, you will obtain a durable and reliable protection against the most varied environmental influences.
Burnishing with the Ultra-5 quick burnishing system offers various advantages
In addition to the already mentioned resistance of a workpiece against various environmental influences, quick blackening with the blackening agent offers further advantages. For example, lubricants adhere better to the surface and lubricated plain bearings have improved emergency running properties. It has been proven that the risk of cold welding is significantly reduced for sliding surfaces.
